WC Desk:

Nupur Saraswat was denied a room in a Hyderabad hotel because she was traveling solo. She decided to take a stand against this unjust act and shared her experience on Facebook:

So, I am standing outside a hotel in Hyderabad which didn't let me stay because they realized I was a "single lady" even…

The post then went viral, and comments poured in-both positive and negative. Some contacted Goibibo and sought clarification to which Goibibo responded saying they will take a look and this is what happened next:

#HyderabadSaga Part 2:I want you guys to see what you have done. 1. Goibibo PR team has offered a verbal apology to me…

As Nupur clarified, she decided to take the matter further because “I am making a fuss because I am not ready to settle. I am not ready to live in the fear of my safety anymore. I am not ready to have an entire system push me around until I “find a man to travel with”. I AM NOT READY TO BE CHAPERONED.”

The founder and CEO of Goibibo, Ashish Kashyap, tweeted out a statement from the booking site:

In the statement, he clarified that Goibibo cares for all its customers, and it does care about women and shall not promote such policies as he clarified: “Policies, content and pricing of the hotels are generated by the hotels themselves. The policies are upfront. See screen shot below. As a platform, we have faced this issue for the first time, hence we are doing thorough investigation into the background behind this policy. We do not support such policies unless backed with a rationale. We will leave no stone unturned to have a scaled solution.” Furthermore, they had de-listed the hotel from their platform.

Saraswat took to Facebook to thank the people on social media for sharing her post, “You guys did this. You made a corporation listen, you took us a miniscule step closer to making solo travel a little easier for women in India.”

Team Women Chapter  congratulates Nupur on her victory and wishes that the idea of women traveling solo becomes acceptable in all parts of the globe soon.
